Compare example footprints before choosing a garage size. Area is a starting point: actual fit depends on your vehicles, wall thickness, openings, walking space and storage.

These are arithmetic examples, not an approved catalogue, interior dimensions, a structural design or a guarantee of fit. The diagram below compares footprints at the same scale.
Record vehicle width, length and height, including accessories you intend to keep. Consider room for doors and tailgates to open and for people to walk around parked vehicles. A wide opening does not by itself guarantee comfortable interior space.
List items that occupy permanent floor space, such as shelving or a workbench. Describe where you want them rather than subtracting a rough total and assuming the layout will work. A measured drawing is the next step after the brief.
Compare the proposed garage with the rest of the property: access, outdoor space, existing structures and service connections. Confirm the applicable municipal requirements before selecting a footprint. Use the Calgary permit guide or Edmonton permit guide for the appropriate starting point.
Keep two sizes in your brief when you are undecided. Explain what the larger option would make possible and whether that extra use is essential. Ask for like-for-like scope when comparing options rather than choosing solely on area.
