Two parking spaces are only the beginning. A useful double garage also needs room to open doors, carry bags, reach storage and move between the vehicles.
Write down both vehicles’ length, width and height, including mirrors, roof accessories and any rear-mounted equipment. Then add the movements you need: opening a child’s door, loading a tailgate or reaching a storage shelf. Record which vehicle arrives first and whether each person can leave independently.
Mark the proposed arrangement at full scale where it is safe to do so, using measurements rather than a photograph. Try the everyday movements with both vehicles present. This exercise informs the brief; it does not establish structural dimensions or replace a measured drawing.
A wider garage can change the space between vehicles; extra depth may be more useful for a long vehicle or storage at the back. Those are different benefits. Our footprint comparison shows 20 × 20, 22 × 22, 24 × 24 and 24 × 26 examples. Exterior footprint is not clear interior space.
For a closer layout decision, read 22 × 22 versus 24 × 24. Keep a preferred and an alternative footprint in your enquiry, and explain the activity the larger option would make possible. A standard dimension is not a promise that every pair of vehicles will fit.
| Choice | What to compare |
|---|---|
| One wide opening | Approach angle, clear opening, opener arrangement and structural design |
| Two openings | Position of each bay, the centre division and clearances to each side |
| Door height | Tallest vehicle with its accessories and the door manufacturer’s clearances |
| Pedestrian entry | A convenient route when the overhead doors are closed |
Ask for the actual clear opening and the remaining space inside, not just a door’s catalogue label. Place shelving and lighting on the same plan. Check how open doors and equipment affect the area above parked vehicles.
Include vehicle measurements, permanent storage and the preferred door arrangement with the construction scope. If you expect EV charging, describe where each vehicle parks and whether both would need charging in future. An electrician must determine the equipment and capacity requirements.
A double garage can be a new detached building or a replacement project. Tell us what exists now. AB Garage Builders will need project-specific details before scope, price or availability can be confirmed.
