A single-car garage with room for what you use

A single-car garage can make a compact footprint useful, provided parking and storage are planned together. Start with your vehicle and the things you need to reach around it.

01 / THE DETAILS

Decide what the space must do.

List the daily tasks before choosing a dimension. Do you need to open a child’s passenger door fully, bring a bicycle out without moving the car, or carry equipment through a pedestrian entrance? These details often matter more than a broad request for “one car plus storage.”

Measure your current vehicle and consider any likely replacement. If a truck or roof rack is part of the plan, include its dimensions. A footprint selected for a small car should not be assumed suitable for a different vehicle. Keep required parking clearance distinct from optional storage.

02 / THE DETAILS

Give storage a real position.

Draw the vehicle, door movement and storage as separate areas. A shelf at the back changes usable depth; shelving along the side changes the room for people to enter and exit. A workbench needs both its own depth and room for the person using it.

Wall storage may reduce floor clutter, but its mounting and location still need design consideration. Avoid deciding on heavy overhead storage before the structure has been designed for that use. Describe what you want to store and ask how it can be accommodated. The size guide explains why gross area alone cannot establish fit.

03 / THE DETAILS

Balance the garage with the yard.

Compare the proposed building with access to the home, bins, gates and outdoor space. Note whether vehicles enter from a lane or street and how construction materials can reach the site. A narrow access route is a useful fact to include early, even before dimensions are settled.

Use the appropriate Calgary or Edmonton permit resource before treating a location as approved. Existing concrete, fences or an old garage are not reliable confirmation of boundaries or permission for new work.

04 / THE DETAILS

Ask for the right comparison.

A smaller garage does not remove the need to define foundation work, doors, exterior finishes and electrical scope. Some project costs relate to access and services rather than floor area. Compare the same specification if you are deciding between a single and a double garage.

Send AB Garage Builders your city, vehicle dimensions, current site and the two or three activities the garage must support. You can enquire while the footprint is undecided. A site and scope discussion comes before a project-specific price or construction date.
