Garage Sizes: Compare 20 × 20, 22 × 22 & 24 × 24
Compare 20x20, 22x22 and 24x24 garage footprints, understand usable space and prepare dimensions for a Calgary or Edmonton garage project.

A 24 × 24-foot footprint has 92 more square feet than a 22 × 22: about 19% more gross area. The useful question is where that extra width and depth improve your everyday layout.
| Example | Area | Difference |
|---|---|---|
| 22 × 22 feet | 484 sq. ft. / about 45.0 m² | Reference |
| 24 × 24 feet | 576 sq. ft. / about 53.5 m² | 92 sq. ft. / about 8.5 m² more |
The larger example adds two feet to each exterior dimension. If a layout were centred and the wall build-up stayed the same, that would distribute as one extra foot on each side. It does not add two feet of clearance beside every vehicle. Actual interior measurements depend on the design.
First, park both vehicles in the intended arrangement and measure the space needed to open the doors you use most. Second, check the rear of each vehicle with the tailgate or hatch open. Third, trace the walking route from the pedestrian entrance to the house while the cars and stored items are in place.
Use the actual vehicle dimensions, including mirrors and accessories. Make a separate note for a future vehicle if that is part of the decision. A builder’s example layout cannot guarantee fit for an unmeasured pair of vehicles.
Decide whether the additional room is intended for a bench, shelving, bicycle access or easier movement. Draw the storage at its real depth. If the issue is a long truck, increased depth may matter more than extra width. If the issue is opening passenger doors, rearranging rear storage alone may not solve it.
Compare the options with the same door arrangement and storage list. Otherwise, a layout can seem better simply because some of your belongings have disappeared from the drawing. The storage and workspace guide gives a useful inventory method.
A footprint calculation is not approval to build. Check the Calgary or Edmonton permit pathway for your property. Do not infer permit classification or foundation design only from these rounded metric conversions.
Ask for both sizes with equivalent roofing, cladding, openings and service scope. The 19% increase in area does not predict a 19% increase in cost. Some items change with dimensions; other costs depend on the site and specification. Keep the line items visible in your budget comparison.
If you are considering a double garage, send both candidate sizes and explain what the larger one would allow. That gives AB Garage Builders a more useful starting point than a dimension alone.
