Garage Storage & Workspace Layout

Sort belongings into daily, seasonal and fixed-station groups, then measure the larger items rather than estimating one combined “storage” area. Record the item’s depth, the space needed to open it and whether another item must move before you can reach it. A bicycle used each morning needs a different zone from a box opened twice a year.

Keep hazardous products subject to their manufacturer’s storage instructions. Do not assign heavy overhead storage from a general sketch: record the intended load and location for the designer to assess.

Copy this table into your notes and complete one row for each large item, activity or access route. Use real measurements. “Must work with vehicle parked” is the decision column: it separates daily access from storage that can reasonably wait until a bay is empty.

Trace the trip from the pedestrian entrance to the house and the route to every daily-use item. Check vehicle doors, hatches, bins and cabinets in their open positions. An empty-garage drawing can disguise a blocked walkway once the vehicles and bicycles return.

For a new detached garage, the site and floor drawings are connected decisions. Calgary directs applicants to identify the proposed garage and existing structures on the site plan; Edmonton’s published site-plan checklist calls for the proposed and existing buildings, measurements and setbacks. A bench needs more than its own footprint. Include room for the person, the material being handled and access to drawers or cabinets. Explain the activities you intend to do so the appropriate professionals can assess services, ventilation and other requirements.

Do not assume residential garage approval covers a commercial workshop or a change to living space. A more intensive use belongs in the initial scope discussion. For occasional hobby use, identify equipment and electrical needs before finishing decisions are made.

This is a planning example, not a recommendation for a particular property. Mark both arrangements at the same scale. If one layout only works after deleting bicycles or shrinking a bench, it is not an equal comparison.

Circle every worksheet row that conflicts with a parked vehicle, door movement or the walking route. First compare a different storage position. If the larger footprint resolves a specific remaining conflict, name that benefit in the project brief instead of requesting “more space” without a purpose.
